I finished A River in the Sky the other day (Friday? I think?), which was the Amelia Peabody I hadn't read, and I enjoyed it, though I don't think it held up well as a story? I don't think there was a lot of there, there, but it did give me Ramses being off on his own (joined, eventually, by David), and I have to admit that what I want most now is the story of Ramses' war years. *hands*
Speaking of which, I have started Code Name Verity, as recommended by a couple of people, and so far I really like it. And! This morning when I turned on my iPad,Deadline Blackout, the third book in the Newsflesh trilogy, downloaded. I AM EXCITE.
Plus, I've been rereading Captain America and I have a bunch of Black Widow stuff to read, and oh, I read last week's Winter Soldier, which mostly gives me a lot of "Oh, Bucky" feels, which is pretty much all I ask for. (I am always amused when someone refers to him as Steve's boy.)
Speaking of Bucky, the other day, I was reading a story about Steve and his angst about everything he's lost, and it was pretty well written except for one HUGE GLARING OVERSIGHT. Like, he spent a lot of time mourning Peggy and Howard, but there was not even ONE MENTION of Bucky. And I was just like, "Really? Seriously?" And I clicked out of the story.
Leaving all shipping concerns aside, I just don't understand how in a story about all the things Steve has lost, someone could completely neglect to mention the loss of his best friend, which is something that doesn't happen all that long before he hits the ice, and something he didn't have a whole lot of time to mourn/get over, and oh yeah, something he blames himself for (Peggy's advice notwithstanding).
( minor spoiler for Avengers ) I feel like leaving it out of fic that is from Steve's POV - and that is explicitly about everything he's lost - is just poor characterization.
Another thing I've noticed - though a lot less since I don't read a lot that is Tony-centric - is the almost complete absence of Maria Stark. Tony didn't spring fully grown from Howard's forehead, but you'd think so just going by how often anyone mentions her.
*
Let us not even discuss the debacle that was last night's Rangers game. Sigh.

60 days out from the big move and the stress is finally starting to hit. I've made the beginnings of a giant to-do list with bits broken down on different days. That helps. I'm determined to get a few things done, and then experience pure enjoyment and relaxation at Wiscon. I'm actually looking forward to the drive up...
SO SO SO excited to meet/hang out with prozacpark, meganbmoore and chaila. If any others of you will be there PLEASE TELL so we can plan! And randomly, some of my high school friends will be in town for a marathon (ugh, physical activity) so they might hang out at some point.

I found this on Tumblr this morning and it made me mad. (I should probably get a bumper sticker saying that, since Tumblr is full of maddening things.)

HIYOOOooo guys. I know that the last real post here was made eight months ago, and... this is not actually a post either... But at any rate, I am alive and doing well, even though man is school a time sink or what? It's like they actually expect you to BE A STUDENT when you are in school?? MADNESS
So this is just to say that I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox, and also that there is a neonatal tumblr thing thataway! Regrettably I seem to have more snippets than extended lengths of time on my hands, which doesn't work too well with LJ-based fandom activities, and I pretty much fucking suck at twitter forevermore, so tumblr it is. It won't be the sort of place where I attempt to, you know, ~build a presence~ or anything, I am not actually moving to tumblr fandom, I am just going to... dick around with a tumblr and do everything wrong :| I mean, I am using it primarily because it seems like it can be less of a commitment than LJ, so things that will probably not happen: 1. checking the dash regularly like I should, and 2. trawling around for cool things to reblog all the time-- BUT, if in my time at this journal you have seen me talk about things that you are also interested in, then now you know where you can find me making incoherent posts about our mutual loves!
Of course this doesn't mean that THIS LJ IS ABANDONED FOR ALL ETERNITY AND I WILL IGNORE ANY ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT ME, as always there are comment notifs (...although I have been known to leave things unanswered for months and months when school gets particularly troublesome...) and e-mail and whatnot, so all in all I guess this isn't a moving at all, it's just, like, that annoying neighbor who lives next door starts showing up outside the Circle K to deliver his unsolicited wackjob political opinions instead of blasting them out into the street from his house with a loudspeaker. And it's not really that he's sold his house or anything, and his cell phone number is still the same (though it is uncertain why you know his number to begin with), but now you just see him a lot more at the Circle K, and also his unsolicited political opinions are still pretty wackjob, except I guess in this case they aren't very wackjob at all, because my opinions are pretty boring.
So if you are into stuff like TV shows, video games, Inception, food, complaining about things that seem pretty trivial upon closer consideration, cats, and other stuff that the Internet is into, and also if you are really bored or masochistic, then come on over :D

Misfits star Joseph Gilgun has praised his new co-stars in the show's fourth series.
Speaking to Digital Spy at the recent Arqiva British Academy Television Awards Nominations party, Gilgun confirmed that filming had begun on new episodes of the E4 drama.
"It's pretty intense, but... we always get some good stuff," Gilgun said. "It's very funny."
The new series of Misfits will introduce three new regular characters following the departures of Lauren Socha (Kelly), Iwan Rheon (Simon) and Antonia Thomas (Alisha).
"It's been an absolute joy," said Gilgun. "They really are lovely, lovely people. You can see they're a bit wide-eyed - I remember feeling like they feel. I know how it feels to be the newbie."
Gilgun also admitted that it felt "extraordinary" to receive a BAFTA nomination for his role as Woody in Channel 4's This Is England '88.
"It is the most unbelievable feeling," the 28-year-old revealed. "As an actor, it doesn't get much better."
The BAFTA Television Awards 2012 take place at the Royal Festival Hall at London's South Bank center on Sunday, May 27.

Friday night-Columbo episodes, including episodes featuring Laurence Harvey and Martin Landau. Both playing smug snake type killers, but I love Laurence so I was kind of rooting for him. To no avail, of course. The Martin Landau episode also had the fabulous Julie Newmar, playing a sort of hippy dippy 70's LA type who appeared to be stoned in most of her scenes.
Saturday
Brunch at Mozzeria. I really need to give up the Eggs Benedict although it is the most insidious thing ever.
Movie-Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
Awesome documentary in Japanese with subtitles and score including Phillip Glass pieces. Basically 90 minutes of Sushi Porn! 30,000 yen sushi porn.
Movie-Dark Shadows. A lame, stupid, badly written, poorly acted piece of crap. Do NOT waste your time or money.
Dinner at Mels Diner.
They do a good tuna melt.
Came home and watched British Panel Shows.
Sunday
Sleeping in/snuggles
I made breakfast.
Karaoke. Very small crowd so I got to sing A LOT:
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square-Bobby Darin
Manana-Peggy Lee (for which I felt it necessary to apologize to the one Latino in the bar)
Satisfy Me-Frank Sinatra
Let's Live for Today-Grass Roots
Wondrous Place-Billy Fury
Don't Rain On My Parade-Bobby Darin
At about 630PM, I went outside to see the eclipse. Daddy Dave had brought the special glasses to make it safe to look. Very impressive.
Why Does it Always Rain on Me?-Travis (Because you're from Scotland?)
Went home and cooked dinner. Watched episodes of Top Gear and then a few QI's.
Today-since I had the day off.
Doctor's appointment. Girl stuff and to talk about the floaters in my eyes that won't go away.
Clothes shopping. I HATE to do it, but I bought some stuff in my current size rather than the one I' m convinced I will magically revert to any day now.
Lunch at Chow.
You gotta love a tuna melt with avocado and their fries are MUCH better than Mels.
Goddess Nails:

Finished reading Reach for the Top: The Turbulent Life of Laurence Harvey
In a few hours, the pain of watching a once-great show will be over and I can return to my love affair with the characters as they were actually written rather than the hideously distorted caricatures that they were forced into becoming by David 'n' Katie and their flying crack monkeys.

I don't post here often anymore, but I just wanted to say that it was AMAZING meeting all of you through mutual House MD love. You were all a huge part of my life for several years, and I can't even imagine what my life would have been like without it.
Mostly, I'm going to miss this show. So much. So much that I'll have to do a rewatch every year. My heart is beating like a motherfucker right now.
So, yeah. That's where I'm at now. End of an era.

Tonight's viewing was another Fourth Doctor four-parter: The Keeper of Traken. (Wikipedia entry; Tardis.wikia.com entry.)
I watched the first two parts while looking after Zaphod, making him dinner, etc. So I didn't manage to liveblog or to watch terribly closely.
Part 3 I managed to watch after Zaphod went to bed, with wineglass and laptop to hand.
( Whee! )
Alas, partway into part 4 the audio cuts out. And when I try to restart the ep, the same thing happens. I can't fast-forward to see if the audio later returns; that just crashes VLC. So I am now watching the rest of it silently, and reading about it on tardis.wikia.com, instead. Oh well.

Hazy sun, warm. Pruned tomatoes a bit yesterday; Chango helped by barking enthusiastically at two squirrels that were chasing each other in the trees. Still reading The Secret Lives of Somerset Maugham -- Maugham traveled to the United States in 1910, and here is a short bit Maugham wrote later in life about visiting the American novelist Henry James (who was also just visiting the U.S., and who felt quite uncomfortable in his native land), and about how James insisted on accompanying him to an intersection to catch the streetcar from Cambridge to Boston:
I protested that I was perfectly capable of getting there by myself, but he would not hear of it, not only on account of the kindness and the great courtesy which were natural to him, but also because America seemed to him a strange and terrifying labyrinth in which without his guidance I was bound to get hopelessly lost ... The street-car hove in sight and Henry James was seized with agitation. He began waving frantically when it was still a quarter of a mile away. He was afraid it wouldn't stop, and he besought me to jump on with the greatest agility of which I was capable. ... I was so infected by his anxiety that when the car pulled up and I leapt on, I had almost the sensation that I had had a miraculous escape from certain death. I saw him standing on his short legs in the middle of the road, looking after the car, and I felt that he was trembling still at my narrow shave.
:-D
Still pleased and excited over last night's Sherlock, and very much looking forward to the next season, whenever it arrives.
Also, ( some last-moment musing and speculation on 'House' ... )

Not dead, yet, and I changed my name back to
ohfreckle. Mostly because some people are being real assholes on the internet using 'eamesie' as their name, and I don't want people to think that's me.
So, I haven't even replied to your comments on my Avengers reaction post. Partly because work is crazy, but mostly because I feel weird about Avengers fandom.
I've waited so long for this movie, and right until I saw it in the theater I was convinced that I'd be knee-deep in fandom. Only I'm not, and I don't even understand why, because I really want to.
A small part of it is the cliquish-ness, I guess, Avengers fandom seems to be scattered all over the place and people seem to communicate a lot over chat and email. The largest part is the negativity that I'm feeling everywhere. The last time I've seen so much kink-, ship- and character-love shaming was in bandom. It's awful and at least for me it takes a lot of fun out of it.
I've been shipping Thor/Loki for a year now, and I love them like burning, but in the last few weeks people have been telling me it's sick and wrong and it's pissing me off. GTFO and read something else then.
Another reason may be that I'm still so deeply in love with Arthur and Eames. I know most people are moving on by now, lots of them leaving or having left LJ, but I'm not prepared to let them go. I still love them like two years ago and I'll probably one those who turn off the lights.
So, that leaves me with doing what I do best: spamming Tom Hardy

LOOK AT HIS FAAAACE :D
( or more like Tom/beard OTP )
I hope Tom made you happy, and I promise I'll try to be around a bit more. If you need me, Twitter is where you usually find me.
